Billy Joel’s diagnosis is normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition where excess cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain’s ventricles. This fluid, which normally cushions the brain and spinal cord, puts pressure on brain tissue when it accumulates abnormally. NPH is uncommon, particularly affecting older adults, and can disrupt various brain functions. While it may mimic dementia, it’s distinct because early treatment can sometimes reverse symptoms.
