Significance Of Anointing Oil In The Bible

The government of the church by the anointing. What a foreign thought to us today! That's because very early there was a major departure from the Scriptural way. And, loving status quo as we do, Christians everywhere feel that they are viewing the norm when they look at their particular way of doing things.

Well, God is merciful. Israel wanted a king, and God, after protesting, gave them one. Eventually this decision led to great men like David, Hezekiah and Josiah, far from lightweights in God's eyes. God has blessed our system too, and produced many "men of God" in spite of our fear of being humanly leaderless (which echoes Israel's fear.)

Scripture indicates that various forms of administration may be permissible. It seems to me that a huge anointing would be released to the people of God if the leadership of a local congregation were shared. If the elders would take their place. If the gifts of the Spirit were taught, sought, and encouraged.

While I'm speaking of "the anointing", let me say a word about "touching God's anointed". This is a Biblical phrase that originated from the mouth of God in reference to His chosen people Israel. As to "the anointing" itself, in the Old Testament a whole host of things was said to be anointed: the tabernacle, all its furniture, the priests, all the priests' clothing, etc. For, far from being a holy word in itself, to "anoint" merely means to rub with oil.

Of course we Christians understand that oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. And in the Greek word "crio" from which we derive the word "Christ", we understand the Holy Spirit's purpose is to rub us all with Himself through the man Jesus.

Did you know that after Christ came into the world, that is, in all the New Testament writings, no other individual is called anointed again? The church, yes. "Special" members of the church? No!

II Corinthians 1:21, God has anointed US in Christ.

I John 2:27, you (plural) have an anointing. That anointing teaches you everything...

The deceiver can't deceive us, because when a teacher teaches, the anointing tells us whether he is teaching the truth. A true teacher can only confirm what we already know in Christ.

So let's be careful of singling certain people out, saying "Wow! What an anointing!" The anointing is in Jesus, Jesus is in YOU! And the same Spirit in you, God will release in abundance to His Church when they recognize without hypocrisy the headship of Jesus.

Yes, there is only one "Anointed One" we need to worry about touching today. His name is Jesus, but He lives in all those who are His. Don't touch God's anointed.

No man has a monopoly on that anointing. Never is submission to one man mentioned in the New Testament. This one-man thing was created by human tradition and sustained by strong men. Since God did not ordain such, I cannot recognize the preeminence of one man in the congregation, though I might recognize his position in Christ and respect him as a brother.

Paul tells me that the head of every man is Christ. Does that relationship stop when I leave my home, the context of which Paul speaks, and enter the assembly of the believers? Absolutely not! Christ is still my head, and I filter all commands and directives and teachings through that Lordship of Christ. I do NOT suddenly turn Christ off so I can turn a mere man on.

There must indeed be leadership in the church. The leaders are a group of men submerged in the Holy Ghost, who call others to obey Jesus, not themselves. They are men who are laying their lives down for the flock, not beating it. They are near-invisible men who are most honored by all.

God has already shown His people that His system of plural leadership works. It's recorded. Recorded also is the sad history of churches totally controlled by the "clergy", a group separate and apart from the "laity." In these churches is often great pain. It is the pain of a wife who has been ridiculed, or ignored, or abused in some other way.

When wives sense that the marriage relationship is not being honored properly, reactions can be violent. That violence can be suppressed by the husband with anger and demands for obedience and questioning of loyalty, or...silenced with an understanding hug.

The church, with all its faults, seems to be awaiting a hug. Submission is much easier after the leaders make the people realize they truly understand, and that they are one with us, not "a cut above."

Suppressed Christians who have gifts from God are liable to be looking for other fellowships where their gift can be expressed. When all the "gifted"ones go, the "remnant" is a group fiercely loyal to a man. Very little fruit can be produced in a situation like this, yet this scene is repeated throughout our land.

How can you tell if your church is controlled by a dictatorial clergy-laity philosophy? A former pastor of the Philadelphia Church in Chicago has come up with a description of the dictator spirit.

1. attitude of lording (as opposed to leading)

2. gains "dominion" over people's lives

3. strong-willed and unyielding (instead of gentle, open-minded)

4. spreads "awe" or fear of himself among the people

5. non-submissive to other leadership

6. overconfidence in himself

7. looks for private "words" to direct flock, ignores Spirit in other leaders

8. makes major decisions without seeking and hearing counsel

9. uses elders as "sounding board" to make up his mind, rather than seeking the mind of God through the collective leadership

10. forces final decisions before the answer is generally clear

11. requires weakness under him. must be "man on top"

12. intimidates others, suppresses body ministry

13. over-disciplinarian tendencies, instead of love and patience

Godly leadership is the most difficult place of all in the Body, contrary to the perceived notion. A true leader is first in line for the executioner's sword.

Recipe For Anointing Oil In The Bible

God did give Moses a formula for a holy anointing oil shortly after the Israelites began the Exodus trek through the desert. It contained four essential oils known for their healing abilities in an olive oil base. Why do you think God chose these particular oils? What are their healing properties? Read on.

o Myrrh 500 shekels

o Cinnamon 500 shekels

o Cassia 250 shekels

o Calamus 250 shekels

o Olive oil 1 hin

A shekel is about 12 grams or approximately a half an ounce. A "hin" was about a half a quart (16 ounces). In I Chronicles 9:30, responsibility for mixing and maintaining a supply of this holy blend went to the priestly caste-the Levites who were the descendants of Aaron. In Ecclesiasticus 38:4,8, they are referred to as "apothecaries," "pharmacists," or "perfumers" depending on your Bible translation.

"The Lord created medicines out of the earth, and the sensible will not despise them.. the pharmacist makes a mixture from them." Eccles 38, 4,8.

This holy anointing oil was a specific blend for anointing the dwelling, furniture and all those who dwelt in the home. The act of anointing thus rendered the home and its occupants holy which meant they were "set apart for God." In a sense, God put his seal upon the people with this special oil. Many today believe that Moses used this aromatic blend to protect the Israelites from a plague.

What meaning does this have for us today? First of all, it is great news. We are being visited by modern day "plagues" such as SARS, MRSA, and many viruses that have actually been around on the earth since Biblical times. Essential oils are a key to protecting ourselves against these deadly diseases. If you study the chemical compounds found in myrrh, cinnamon, cassia, and calamus you find that according to modern science, these oils contain either immune-stimulating or antiviral compounds or both. If that is the case, then no home should be without these medicinal therapeutic grade essential oils.

For more information on the chemistry of these ancient essential oils you may wish to attend an aromatherapy program that emphasizes the chemistry and proper use of therapeutic grade essential oils.

What Is The Purpose Of Anointing Oil In The Bible

When Jesus set about his healing ministry, he prayed, laid-on hands and apparently anointed those who were sick. The scriptures don't really state that he personally anointed the sick, however he sent his disciples out to heal and anoint all those who were sick-and they were not using their cooking oils for this anointing. So if anointing with oils like frankincense, myrrh, balsam, cedarwood and spikenard was so important to Jesus' healing ministry, why did they stop doing it?

For the first few decades every Christian could anoint with blessed oil for healing of body and soul. These oils would be blessed at their gatherings by the chief elder at the same time as the bread and wine were blessed. People would then take the oils home to use with their families that week. It is wise to remember that these oils were also considered medicines and were used for all kinds of diseases. So the first use of anointing in the Christian church for primarily for healing the sick. They even sent blessed phials of oils to friends and relatives for their healing who lived at a distance. Some of the early women healers set up the first hospitals for the sick where they used essential oils for healing and comfort. Only gradually did anointing become part of the rituals for baptism, confirming one in the faith, for forgiveness of sin, and to anoint the hands of those called to be deacons, deaconesses and later priests and bishops.

What are some of the reasons why the Christian Church lost sight of anointing for healing? Here are a few of the reasons:

1. Anointing eventually was given to the priesthood only (women were the principal healers by virtue of their ability to care for their families. However, they were excluded from this church function)

2. After a few centuries, essential oils were primarily used in a public way to anoint penitents for the forgiveness of sin (This required a donation to the church)

3. Anointing gradually was just for the seriously ill who were about to die (last rites)

4. Anointing became "symbolic" for the inner anointing of the Holy Spirit

5. To receive this final anointing, one had to make a hefty donation to the church

6. The oil used by the church was no longer a "healing oil" but a carrier oil like olive with some fragrance-usually balsam added to it. (Thus it really was symbolic in nature!)

7. Reformers threw anointing out as only "play-acting"

To learn more about this fascinating story of how the Christian Church moved so far from the teachings of Jesus, I invite you to investigate a program that aims to restore this form of healing in our Christian life. How can we learn today the ancient art of healing with aromatic essential oils? Educational courses that are Christian-based can help us reclaim our rightful role in healing and anointing.

Anointing With Oil In The Bible

Frankincense truly has proven to be a gift from the creator for me and my family! As are all of the oils I use from Young Living!

I personally have used frankincense for a number of things, including creating a blend that included frankincense for my husband after he suffered a small stroke from food poisoning. As a result of this, he had double-vision. The eye doctor said he had a small nerve damaged in the brain. So, I made up an oil blend which included frankincense that I applied to the brain stem, temples, top of head, and on the brain reflex points on the feet. I applied it 2-3 times. And the next day...no more double vision!

Frankincense truly is a healing gift! Considered the Holy Anointing Oil, it is well-known historically for its healing powers. It has been used medicinally and spiritually for thousands of years, since the dawn of recorded history. It is mentioned in the Bible 22 times from Exodus to Revelation. A man's wealth was measured by his stores of frankincense oil. Because it was valued more than gold at that time, it was given to Jesus. It takes 40 years for a frankincense tree to mature so that the oil resin can be extracted. This accounts for the esteemed value of the oil.

Here are some interesting things about frankincense.

Inhalation increases spiritual awareness.

Frankincense helps increase the activity of leukocytes in defending the body against infection.

Frankincense can be applied to the Vitaflex points for the brain to help the limbic region for production of thyroid and human growth hormone. That point is on the back of the big toe on the right foot.

Applying frankincense to the sternum (breastbone) helps protect the immune system and body from negative energies such as radiation, electromagnetic frequencies, and microwaves.

Frankincense has been considered a "Universal Medicine" from ancient times to present. It was good for "everything from gout to a broken head," according to Egyptian hieroglyphics. It was used for depression, cancer, inflammation, to boost the immune system and for respiratory infections.

"In 1993 a friend of mine introduced me to essential oils. As he shared his love for the oils, I showed him a small basal cell carcinoma that was near my lip and told him I was scheduled the following week to have it surgically removed. He handed me a small bottle of frankincense and told me to apply it three or four times a day. I applied it immediately and within 24 hours the carcinoma had changed characteristic and, within 36 hours, was completely gone. The carcinoma has never returned and that fateful meeting changed my life forever."

-Jean Marie Hepworth

Indeed, frankincense is a powerful oil and I always have it in my home!

What The Bible Says About Anointing Oil

Many people want more power off God and want to be able to do signs and wonders but are not prepared to put the hard work into it and not really interested in giving their whole life to Jesus. If you really want to increase your anointing and want to give your whole life for it this article is for you.

One day I was in a new Age bookshop looking at books on spells and on witchcraft and thinking of buying one. This was 17 years ago. Jesus said to my heart. "Get out of here and don't buy a book. You think you are doing research so you can talk to witches better, but you want to cross over and move in their power as you are sick of waiting for my power."

One thing you can say about Jesus is when he makes a point there is not much sense in an argument. I tried to tell Him that He was wrong, and yet how silly is that? Telling Jesus He was wrong.

7 years ago I was looking for the power of the anointing. Today I possess it in a little measure. Not as much as the people on the world stage, but quite a lot more than the average Sunday worshipping Christian. If I was going to boil down what I did to get here down to a few points this is what they are

Become set apart for God

There is not a lot of teaching out there about this, or if there is a lot of teaching, I just don't seem to see it in my travels.

To be set apart for God, you have to have purpose, destiny and vision even though those three seem like the same thing.

Your whole life has to be focused on doing God's will for your life.

Many people are stopped right here as they do not know their purpose on earth and God's will for their life so it is hard to be focused on something that they don't know about.

The will of God for your life is most often what you would love to do for God. If you ask yourself if time and money were no barriers or training was not a barrier what would you like to do for God.

All my life I wanted to be a preacher.

I have only preached 3 times from a pulpit and I am 43. I have wanted to do this for 29 years and all I have to show are 600+ articles/sermons and 400 videos on YouTube. You can see, that I have done a lot and yet I am still not doing what I was destined to do to my full capacity.

Once you find out what you want to do for God, you need to take small steps toward doing it.

Writing my first article was a small step. Getting 200 done was a larger step and passing the 600 mark was more and more. Getting a video camera and doing my first video was a larger step and then doing more and more was more of a step.

I did ten 1 hour teachings and put them on DVD and watched them and was fascinated at how powerfully the Holy Spirit spoke through me.

When you work out what you need to do, when you know the first step, you need to do that.

Secondly a good way to be set apart is to spend your time doing things that have more to do with God and His will in your life and less time doing things that are not Godly. This can mean stopping watching the amount of TV that you do, watching less DVD's and reading less Newspapers and magazines that are full of stuff we don't need to know about.

Spend time in the Word of God, in books that are going to equip you to do God's will in your life and watching edifying videos that will equip YouTube it is possible to spend many hours learning things about God and his purposes.

Another way to bet set apart for God is to be set apart with our money. Finding a way to spend 10% or 20% or higher of our income on good things for God Kingdom that are going to good things and not prosperity teachers is a good way to be set apart.

Obey the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit wants to direct all of us. If you cannot hear the Holy Spirit that can be fixed by going back and doing the last thing you think God told you to do that you did not do. When you obey that last direction you will get your next direction.

Being set apart for God and living out your purpose can only be really done well if you can hear from the Holy Spirit. Make sure that you obey as through obedience to Christ you will grow from the slave Master relationship with Jesus to a point where you are a friend of God and He is directing you and giving you a measure of His power and anointing.

God wants to be able to trust you with His power and anointing. For this power and anointing to drop in you therefore you need to and be:

- Know your purpose

- Know each step the Holy Spirit is giving you and doing it.

- Be only interested in serving God and not the world or your own passions.

- Be trustworthy with real power

- Have a good record of doing what you are told to do by God.

I hope this has helped you. My prayers are with you.

Matthew Robert Payne

PS One very big key ingredient to a strong anointing that no one likes doing is time spent in prayer. Until you love the Lord enough to spend a lot of time with Him you will not walk in strong power.

Bible Scriptures On Anointing Oil

Use Of Anointing Oil In The Bible

As the holidays near, it is important to remind ourselves of what we are really celebrating. Christmas day is symbolically the birthday of Jesus Christ, who according to the Christian Faith, died for our sins to be forgiven. Jesus is an important figure today regardless of what faith you may follow. However, aside from his crucifixion, many don't know much about the meaning of word "Christ."

In order to know the origin of a word, it is important to study its etymology and gradual cultural changes in meaning and pronunciation. For example, the word "dis" is shortened slang for disrespect. I've even seen news reporters now using the word. However, if someone simply heard the word without knowing it was short for disrespect then they would have a difficult time making sense of the slang. First, we must remind ourselves that Jesus Christ was not actually his name or surname. Christ is actually a title. So it should be rendered as "Jesus the Christ" similar to "Obama the President" or its reciprocal which was actually commonly used historically as "Christ Jesus;" the same way as you might say "President Obama" or "Dr. King."

Let us also be reminded that none of these biblical figures actually spoke English. Jesus spoke Aramaic, a Semitic language belonging to the Afroasiatic language family, which includes about 375 living languages from Africa to the Middle East. The Semitic language is a subset and includes the Canaanite languages of Hebrew, Phoenician and Arabic. The word Christ in its original context doesn't directly have anything to do with "Savior." Christ most directly comes from the Greek word "Khristos" or in Latin "Christus" which both essentially mean, "covered in oil." In the Septuagint, the early version of the Hebrew Bible, Khristos replaced the word Messiah, which means, "anointed." In the Hebrew rituals followers were anointed with holy oil. Some also believe that the word "Christ" most directly comes from Kemet/Egypt from the word "Karast" or "Krst" which was an anointing oil used during the process of mummification. But it is my assertion that even the Egyptians were influenced by another culture which I shall elaborate on.

Some may stop here and be satisfied with this explanation for the word Christ. But let's ask ourselves, if Jesus had the title "Christ," supposedly as a honorific title of distinction to separate himself from ordinary mankind, then how is it the word existed prior to him? If he were meant to carry a special designation that the rest of humanity is unable to obtain shouldn't there have been another word created after his birth or death to signify him as an exception? Clearly there must have been others given the title of Christ before him in order for the word to even have existed. For example, if an alien landed on our planet and had never seen water before chances are they wouldn't have a word for it. They would have to either adopt our word for it or make up their own. And yet because we do have water we have many ways to not only describe it in its many forms but to even describe how it flows as witnessed on any garden hose nozzle - "mist, spray, shower, jet, stream, soak" etc but it is difficult to see how you get the word "Khristos" from the word "Messiah."

To get the answer we must dig a little deeper into the etymology of these words. The word messiah also comes rendered in several other versions such as mashiah, moshiah, mashiach, or moshiach, which literally means "anointed one." Hamashiach means "king anointed." They were terms used in the Hebrew Bible to describe priests and kings who were traditionally anointed with the holy anointing oil as described in Exodus 30:22-25. Cyrus the Great, king of Persia, as another example, although not a Hebrew, is referred to as "God's anointed" (Messiah) in the Bible. From the word "Masiah" we derive various words such as "Sah" which means "radiant." And also "Ah" means "fire pot." The word "Hat" means "shining ones" and "Isseh" means "offering made by fire."

The word Chrism, mostly used by early Christian Gnostics & Catholic Romans, also means "holy oil." The word Gnostic comes from the word Gnosis which means "knowledge," but in particular a mystic knowledge that comes from within. Many of the Gnostic texts say that in order to be called worthy of the title 'Christian' one must also be anointed with Holy oil and that the water baptism alone is incomplete. From the book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" author Mary Baker Eddy writes "The invisible Christ was imperceptible to the so-called personal senses, whereas Jesus appeared as a bodily existence. This dual personality of the unseen and the seen, the spiritual and material, the eternal Christ and the corporeal Jesus manifest in flesh, continued until the Master's ascension, when the human, material concept, or Jesus, disappeared, while the spiritual self, or Christ, continues to exist in the eternal order of divine Science, taking away the sins of the world, as the Christ has always done, even before the human Jesus was incarnate to mortal eyes."

Thus the Chrism is the holy oil and the Messiah was one who was anointed with the oil. Now if we go back to the Bible, we know from Luke 3:16 and Matthew 3:11 that John the Baptist stated "saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:" Now we should be asking ourselves what does all this anointing, holy oil, fire, water, messiah & chrism have to do with each other and what is its spiritual significance? As with most ceremonies the rites are typically symbolic of something. But where did this anointing ritual originate? Did the Hebrews just make it up? Well, I'm glad you asked...

The answer lies much further away, in the East, in the lands of India influenced by the Vedic culture. The Vedas are the oldest Holy Scriptures to be discovered to this day. You may have heard of the "Aryans" which means "Noble." The present day word for "Iran" comes from this root. This is the same word that the Germans used during the holocaust to try and distinguish the "Aryans/Arians" as supposedly a superior or pure race of beings. You may have also heard of an "Aryan invasion" which supposedly was by Westerners who moved eastward into the Harrapan areas, but there are many who will attest this never happened and in fact the Vedic followers moved westward influencing all areas in between. Essentially all evidence supports the idea that the word "Aryan" originated in the East. This is fairly consistent with the story of Abraham, spiritual personage favored by God, who traveled from the East to new lands promised to him in Canaan.

The Vedas, according to legend were written thousands of years ago in the language known as Sanskrit. The Sanskrit word véda "knowledge, wisdom" is derived from the root vid - "to know." This is reconstructed as being derived from the Proto-Indo-European or Proto-Indo-Aryan root *ueid-, meaning "see" or "know." According to this same legend, before they were ever written down on palm leaves they were passed from one person to another orally, completely from memory. That may be heard to believe considering the Vedas are some of the longest written texts known. These early individuals were supposedly unlike the modern man of today. They were known as rishis (seers) who are supposed to be "liberated souls." In essence, they are divine personages free from karmic sin, apparently with perfect memories able to retain incredible amounts of information, who manifest on Earth simply to serve as ideal human models for the inspiration of mankind.

Whats the Bible Scripture For Healing Oil?

The sight of a pastor or a priest anointing a member of their congregation is a pretty common one, but not always one that new members to the fold can understand. Anointing CBD oil in California is much more than a new, stylish kind of facial moisturizer! Here is a quick peek at the true meaning of anointing and anointing oils, and how they are used in the family of God.

What Does It Mean to be Anointed?

Before one can understand the symbolism of Biblical Anointing oils used for anointing they would have to first understand what it means to be anointed. Someone who is anointed has been set apart, made different from those around them in the eyes of God. Abba Anointing Oil had perhaps the best definition of what it truly means to be anointed on the web:

“To be “anointed” is, among other things, to be made sacred (consecrated); to be set apart and dedicated to serve God; to be endowed with enabling gifts and grace; to be divinely designated, inaugurated, or chosen for some purpose.”

The words “anointed” and “anointing” appear often in the Bible.

Mark 6:13 “And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.”

Hebrews 1:9 “Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.”

Anointing Oils

There are many different kinds of anointing oils in California, and which is used is usually determined by the church, temple or synagogue that is performing the ceremony or invocation. The first anointing oil in the Bible was found in Exodus, when the Lord ordered Moses to make a holy anointing oil of the finest spices, including flowing myrrh, sweet-smelling cinnamon, fragrant cane, cassia and olive oil. This oil was used by the priests in the temple. Today anointing oils are made of similar ingredients; one recipe calls for an oil to be made of olive oil, salt, sugar, allspice seeds, whole cloves, myrrh or frankincense.

How Anointing Oils are Used in California

The Biblical Anointing oils are used for a number of different purposes but serve as a symbolic representation of our faith that Christ will answer our prayers through divine intervention. Oil used for anointing is often used when praying for the needs of a specific individual to show that the church is placing their faith in Christ to address that need. Oils are also used during burial, in preparing weapons for war and for their calming influences.

Biblical Anointing oils are a vital part of the church and its rituals, and they spread across many cultures. To learn more about the practice of anointing in your church, speak to your pastor, rabbi or priest. They will be happy to answer your questions and set your feet on the path to greater understanding.

How Was Anointing Oil Made In The Bible

Have you ever wondered what constituted a "holy anointing oil" in the Bible? We know what Moses used but what did Jesus use? That of course has been lost in history. One thing is for sure-he was not using cooking or lamp oil. For the early Christian church, olive oil played an important role, especially in the Oriental Christian rites. However, they rarely used olive oil by itself. It was mixed with a fragrant element. Until about the thirteenth or fourteenth century this fragrant element was balsam. (Recent research shows that balsam may have been the "Balm of Gilead.") Prayers were said over the oil asking God to 'sanctify' the oil, that is, make it sacred so that the Holy Spirit could act through it. This sanctified oil was referred to as the "oil of anointing," the "oil of prayer," "oil of grace," "oil of joy," or "myron." Once the oil was empowered through this prayer, it became a vehicle for sanctification so the healing that came from the oil was a result of the power of the Holy Spirit.

What Was in the Recipe Given to Moses?

Moses was given a recipe for a holy anointing oil by God that contained four oils: Myrrh, Cinnamon, Cassia and Calamus with a very small amount of olive oil thrown in as well. This would have made the oil stay on the body longer since aromatic oils-essential oils as they are called today-evaporate quickly. Essential oils are the life blood of the plant and many are antimicrobial, relaxing or invigorating. Some common oils used through the centuries to fragrance the holy anointing oils include: Balsam, Cinnamon, Benzoin, Frankincense, Orange, Jasmine, Musk, Ambergris, Civet, and Bergamot.

Orthodox Christian Chrism

Holy oil (chrism) in the Orthodox tradition consisted of pure olive oil to which a good proportion of wine and a large number of other ingredients-plants and spices was added. This oil was symbolic of the manifold gifts of the Holy Spirit. It took three days to prepare this holy chrism which was blessed on Holy Thursday by the patriarch or metropolitan of each Orthodox Church. Byzantine chrism combined olive oil with between thirty-eight and fifty-seven aromatic substances, making it one of the most complex synergistic blends ever devised. If you have ever attended an Orthodox service, you know that generous amounts of incense and holy oils are used.

Roman Catholic Anointing Oils

In the Roman Catholic Church, there are three oils. Holy chrism-consecrated by the bishop, is used to anoint the newly baptized, to seal the candidates for confirmation and to anoint the hands of presbyters and the heads of bishops at ordination. This oil is also used to dedicate churches and altars. The oil of catechumens-used in the preparation of catechumens for their baptism. Oil for the sick used to bring comfort and support to those who are ill. There is very little difference in the make-up of these three oils. The base is pure olive oil with some fragrance provided by balsam or a similar sweet smelling oil.

Anointing in the Lutheran Church

The recipe for the anointing oil used in the Lutheran church according to the Lutheran Book of Worship (1982) called for the oil to be "olive oil to which an aromatic ingredient such as synthetic oil of cinnamon or oil of bergamot may be added." This is the only reference I have found to a church using a "synthetic" oil in place of an essential oil. The symbolism of anointing has survived in this tradition if not the true meaning of healing body/mind/spirit with the oil.

How can we learn today the ancient art of healing with aromatic essential oils as anointing oils? Educational courses that are Christian-based can help us reclaim our rightful role in healing and anointing.

Bible Anointing Oil Dosage

The Scriptures fail to mention whether Jesus anointed anyone with a healing oil whether it was olive oil or an aromatic essential oil. But could it be that anointing was just so commonplace among rabbis that mentioning it would have been redundant? The question is a good one. However, the Scriptures do tell us that he sent his disciples-the seventy-out to heal and anoint all those who were sick in body and mind. Hmmm. Well if he sent the disciples out in twos into the towns and villages to anoint, then the anointing must have been an important part of the healing. We see no evidence that the disciples questioned Jesus on how to do this anointing so we can presume that Jesus taught them the proper way of using a healing aromatic oil-what we call today-an essential oil.

Rabbinic Sources Say Essential Oils Were Prescribed for Healing

As a Jewish rabbi, Jesus would have known how rabbis used oils. Rabbinic sources from that period prescribe the use of oil in an everyday context for the treatment of sciatic pains, skin afflictions, headaches, and wounds. And there are several examples in Jewish literature that prescribed ritual anointing for exorcism of demons and as part of the process for the healing and release of the bewitched. Therefore, it is quite plausible that Jesus used oils in his everyday encounters with those who were sick. And we know that since he sent his disciples out with clear instructions on anointing, he must have taught them not only how to anoint but when to anoint and what part of the body to anoint.

What Oils Were Used for Healing?

The next question might be "What kind of oil did he use?" This we do know-it was not solely with cooking or lamp oil which would have been their olive oil. The rabbis used healing oils which today we know as therapeutic essential oils. Oils that would have been readily available, although expensive, were oils like frankincense, myrrh, cedarwood, spikenard, balsam, and many more. These oils would have been produced in various ways, all labor intensive through crude distillation or in some cases, immersing the plant material in a heavier oil like olive oil until the essence of the plant oozed out infusing the olive oil with its healing qualities. In this case, the olive oil would have acted like a "carrier" containing the healing properties of the essential oil. But these oils likewise would have been costly. Even more expensive were custom-made blends. A blend referred to in the Gospels was Nard. Jesus was anointed by a woman in all of the Gospel stories with a substance referred to as "Nard." This is actually a blend of spikenard and myrrh and would have been blended as by the perfumer. Spikenard does not have a pleasant fragrance but rather smells more like 'dirty socks' being in the valerian family of plants. The myrrh would have tempered the fragrance making it a much more pleasing aroma. The story tells us that this oil was contained in an alabaster jar and worth a year's wages. In today's money value, that would amount to approximately $35,000! These alabaster jars would have taken upwards of a year to carve and would have stood about 18 inches high with a slender neck filled with a wax to keep the precious oil or ointment inside for many years. Similar alabaster jars were found in the tomb of Tutankhamen, en Egyptian Pharaoh and still contained precious oils of frankincense, myrrh or balsam.

How Did Jesus and the Disciples Afford Expensive Healing Oils?

The next question might be-"how did Jesus, an itinerant preacher and his disciples who were fishermen, tax collectors and housewives, afford these expensive oils?" Again, the Scriptures give us a clue. They tell us that the "women saw to the needs of the ministry." These were not just poor women-they were women of substance and they provided for whatever was needed for Jesus' ministry to go forward. From this we can deduce that they purchased the expensive aromatic oils for the healing ministry of Jesus.

How can we learn today the ancient art of healing with aromatic essential oils? Educational courses that are Christian-based can help us reclaim our rightful role in healing and anointing. The Institute of Spiritual Healing and Aromatherapy does just that.

Olive Oil Anointing Bible

It's a subject on many people's minds but the anointing comes at a price. God doesn't just give His anointing away easily and when we have it God wants us to use it. The Anointing has increased in my life and so has the responsibility. Here is a simple article as to why God would increase your anointing.

I bought a book once by Benny Hinn on the Anointing and I bought it as I wanted to learn about it and have it in my life. I might not have been ready to receive the information and have since given the book away but when I read it, I didn't seem to learn anything.

I once heard a guy that come to a church I was attending and he talked about the anointing. He said something simple. He said:

The Anointing is simply: The Power to Do the Job

Now depending on how BIG the job you have to do is, that measures how much of the Holy Spirit's anointing is in your life. I have realized in the past three months the Anointing in my life has gone up.

Each week 2000 people read something I have written in the Internet on EzineArticles or somewhere else. There is an Anointing of the Holy Spirit on everything I write and there exists and Anointing in my life as I write the things that I write.

I also manage a team of prophetic people and we do free prophecies on the Internet. For a few years they came in at a rate of about twenty requests per week and now in the last three months that figure has shot up to forty five requests per week.

With this increase I have had to promote a team leader and mentor her to run a team of prophets like me to cater to this demand. In these three months I have noticed the Holy Spirit has increased my Anointing in my life.

I am finding people I know want to sit down and have a long chat with me in the past few months. As a prophet I am fairly intense and people kind of give me a wide birth and yet some of the people I have forged a relationship with are starting to want to spend quality time with me.

This is a sign to me that they really want to hear what the Holy Spirit wants to say through me. As now quite a lot these days in an hour conversation the Holy Spirit directs the conversation for me to say what God wants me to say to each person.

When you understand that the Anointing is the Power to Do the Job you have to decide to get busy for God for Him to increase the Anointing in your life. For God to increase His Anointing in your life there has to be a reason, so first of all if you want it to increase you need to decide what you want to do for God in a bigger way and go after it.

It's wonderful to have the presence of God and when you worship you can feel the presence of God. But it's quite another thing for the Anointing of God to come upon you when you are in a conversation and the person that is listening is so transfixed at what is being shared they simply can't leave until the message is shared in its entirety.

Now the Holy Spirit of God knows every persons timetable and if they have to really go and get back to work or if they can take and extra half an hour for lunch to listen. The Holy Spirit knows when that certain person who really needs to hear what He has to say through you is going to have the time and the Anointing will only drop on you the time that they need to stay.

I have heard people say the Anointing is addictive. Benny Hinn seems to talk about the Anointing a lot as I have heard him talk about it. It is simply the power of the Holy Spirit and it should be respected and not talked about in any cheap way. But I have heard on a few occasions people say the Anointing is addictive.

I can testify when I sit down to prophesy over a person that I really enjoy God speaking though me and I love the wonderful peaceful blanket that seems to come all over me.

But we all have the Holy Spirit and it is my aim to speak to you if you don't know much of the Power of God to get a bit of that into your life. If you want more of the Holy Spirit, why don't you get serious with God and ask Him what can you do for Him

I know that we need people to prophesy on our teams on my website and I know that we can pray for you to get the gift of prophecy. I know also that we need intercessors on our website that can pray over the prophecies that are done and if you are good in prayer, then we can use you.

But that's just me throwing a few ideas out there for you. I am sure if you put your mind to it you can come up with something to do for the body of Christ.

Just remember you have to get busy for God for Him to give you the Power.

It's no use having a Powerful car in a garage. It's no use God increasing the Power of His Anointing of His in your life if you are not going to do a job for Him.

Want a really big Anointing? Get a very BIG job to do for the Lord and He will give it to you!

I promise you

Love ya

Be blessed
